2. “It’s a dog eats dog world.”
This phrase is used when there is ruthless competition. But do dogs really eat other dogs? This saying actually comes from the Latin proverb “anis caninam non est” which means a dog will not eat another dog. In real life, dogs do not eat other dogs; if this does happen, we would know something is wrong in the world we live in.
3. “Nothing is impossible.”
Although this is an inspirational saying, to say the least, this could get your hopes up. There are limitations to what a person can achieve. Even if we think that we, as human beings, are the smartest creatures on earth, we are not limitless. That is also why there are rules and regulations to abide by. But if we pertain to a particular goal we have, then yes, nothing is impossible if we work hard to reach our goal. Keep in mind that everyone has a limit, and certain things are impossible. Even when the world evolves, we can never attain those kinds of things.
4. “Mutual Agreement.”
This saying is redundant, to say the least. You don’t have to say mutual if it is an agreement because an agreement is between two or more people with the same views and have agreed on the same things. So “mutual” doesn’t have to be added to the equation. Next time you use this saying, you can just say you had an agreement instead of mutual agreement, it is a more precise and smarter move.
5. “Good things come to those who wait.”
This saying might be tremendous and overused, but it actually is kind of wrong. Why should you wait for something good to happen to you when you can work hard for the good things, right? So if you hear this or is said to you, tell them otherwise.
6. “Piece of cake.”
This weird saying means something is simple, easy to do, or takes little effort. The idea of cake being “easy” to make can make sense, but when used in a sentence, it can confuse foreigners. The term “it’s a piece of cake” was first used in print in 1936 by Ogden Nash who wrote, “Her picture’s in the papers now, and life’s a piece of cake.”
7. “Don’t worry, be happy.”
This weird saying never really made sense. You can never avoid being worried if you are a real human being. We go through different emotions each day, and to be worried means that you care, and you are conscious of what happens in your surroundings. You can’t also be happy all the time for life is a perfect balance of ups and downs, and when you’ve been through all of those, that’s when you’ll know you have lived your life.
8. “Money can’t buy happiness.”
This is somewhat a weird saying when you come to think of it. Money can actually buy things or experiences which contribute to one’s happiness. Especially today, you can never move when you don’t have money. Everywhere you turn, you’ll be paying for something, and if you don’t have money, you will have problems that may cause sadness. But in some people, there are better things to do than spend money just to be happy, so this saying really does depend on each person’s point of view.
9. “I could care less.”
When a person says this, they usually say this because they do not care about something or someone. In reality, the meaning of this phrase is that you actually care, but not too much that it shows. Instead of saying this, you could always say, “I don’t care” for it to be more precise next time.
10. “There is no such thing as a stupid question, only stupid people.”
This does not make sense at all. Where do questions come from? They come from people who think of those questions. There are both stupid questions and stupid people in the world. It depends on how you perceive a problem and how it is asked and if it is insensitive at the moment or utterly ridiculous. We can never avoid these types of questions, so be sure that you are always prepared for a right comeback answer.
