A myth has been circling for the longest time now that the “Millennial” or the people of the current generation, possibly born after the 1990s, are just job-hoppers. They call it quits and change jobs more frequently than people of the past ages.
Companies have even stated that employees nowadays aren’t loyal to the agencies they work for; instead, they are always looking out for themselves without thinking twice about how their choices will shed consequences over the companies they were working for.
While this might be true to some extent, there are some very grave reasons why today, employees quit their jobs more often. There is a lot for a company to understand in this regard. If a company wants to keep all its employees loyal to their cause, they need to know why employees are eager to leave their agencies.
We did complete research on this and even did quite many surveys to understand the primary reasons behind people leaving their jobs and concluded our study on the ten purposes mentioned below.
1. Bad Management
If a manager or the team leader isn’t able to point his employee in the right direction, motivate him to work hard, or manage his team on fairgrounds, there will be a lot of hassle causing the group to disperse.
Not having a clear structure of goals and duties is off-putting for a lot of employees who come to an organization hoping they will find structural management over here. The CEO needs to ensure the team leaders he has appointed are well-capable of managing the teams.
2. No Opportunity for Growth
We all start working with one main goal, growth, and development. No employee wants to stay at a single point for the rest of his life. If an organization doesn’t offer growth and opportunities, chances are they will lose their employees rapidly.
Growth and development are significant for every employee who wants to go further. We all have our goals, and that can only be achieved once we work towards it.
The organization must offer yearly increments, promotions, and target based salary raise because if it doesn’t, employees will not strive to be at a better place.
3. No Respect
There are a variety of reasons why good employees leave their jobs, but as we have come to realize it, all the reasons stem from a single source that is respect.
If an employee doesn’t receive the respect he has earned and deserves, it will become tough for you to make them stay.
Respect can mean different things for different people, but commonly, it is the way one is treated by his employers, by his coworkers, and by the entire office fraternity.
4. The Unreasonable Volume of Work
One of the most significant issues we saw among the companies is that their high-performing employees often had the most unreasonable load of work on their shoulders.
Feeling over-worked and over-stressed isn’t suitable for the employees, and they should only be given an amount of work they can easily handle without losing their minds.
If they feel that they are working way too much and not getting paid enough in return or are always under duress, they will look for better options, ones that will provide the employees with maximum comfort.
5. Frustration With the Supervisor
This might sound a bit vague, but we came across a lot of workers who left their jobs because the manager or the direct supervisor wasn’t allowing them to breathe.
There are always agreements and disagreements on some matters when it comes to working in an environment, but if those disagreements persist, there becomes a kind of dark cloud that will force the employee to look for other options.
A lot of managers do not possess the ethics of professional development; they lack resources and even education at some organizations. When an employee feels undermined by his supervisor, who won’t let him grow, he eventually leaves and looks for a supervisor that will not only teach him but will also provide him with the space to grow.
6. Lack of Communication
Often, excellent employees leave their workspace because of poor communication. If there isn’t something right with the project, an astute manager should read the warnings and let a notice out so that the havoc can be managed within time.
Good employees will always bring issues and problems to the attention of their employers, but if the employers don’t pay any heed, they will stop communicating things in the future. This can cause a massive problem for the organization, and when things get gloomier, employees will leave because they weren’t told about things in time.
7. Not Being Recognized for His Efforts
We asked around a lot of employees that would be the one reason they will quit their job, and 70% of them said, not being appreciated and recognized is a big deal, and they will quit if their leaders don’t see their efforts.
Now, this is a huge deal for anybody, for employers and employees both. We all work not just to get monetary satisfaction, but we also want to get rewarded for all the efforts we are making through kind gestures and appreciation.
If an employer cannot appreciate and recognize the efforts of his employee, he will lose him sooner rather than later.
8. Lack of Trust
If you’re a company owner and you want to make sure your employees stay committed to their jobs, the most important thing is to build trust. For an employee or even an employer, for that matter, trust is the most valuable possession. If an employer doesn’t have the confidence of his employee, he should be prepared to receive a resignation letter any day now.
Leaders who do not trust their employees and continuously question their determination and ask them to seek approval on every single thing they have to do eventually cause the employee to leave. Nobody wants to work under leadership that won’t trust his better judgment. If you are hiring a high-level employee, he will ask if you trust his methods and let him provide you with ease his way. If you can’t trust him, he will look for an environment that will.
9. No Support From the Colleagues
Good employees always look for a high-performing environment. An empowering colleague can make the workplace seem so much better as compared to someone who only comes to the office to bring each other down.
Most of the right employees quit when they find themselves trapped in a toxic environment. Having a supportive environment helps the employees achieve their goals collectively and individually.
10. Seeing Other Employees Leave
There is a saying, “Employees join companies and leave managers.”
This is as true as it can get. Most of the employees leave when they see their good employees going. It stains their trust in the company, and they think that maybe the values of the company that pushed them to join aren’t there anymore, so they quit.
